High school.

The place that helped to shape me into the person I am today. I am so thankful to have spent most of my high school journey in Jamaica. The school I attended and the people I surrounded myself with, really influenced me positively. I will be forever grateful for my experiences.

Today I will be sharing five things I wish I knew before I entered high school:

1.Do not procrastinate before a big test.

This may seem obvious but some people, including myself, forget that. Time flies by quickly and once it’s gone, there’s no getting it back. Waiting the night before or even the morning of, to study for a big exam is a definite no.  Although I still managed to get good grades most times, I always wonder how I would’ve done if I actually studied.

2. The friends you enter with aren’t necessarily the friends you’ll be leaving with.

High school is usually a place where you grow, learn and change. Sometimes you begin to drift away from your friends because of the person you become or they become.  It’s not a bad thing to change but when you do; personalities might not mesh and nothing is wrong with that. Just try not to have bad blood with each other.

3. The journey will be filled with trials and tribulations.

Don’t be fooled by the glitz and glam from the movies. High school is hard, especially in the Caribbean, so do not enter with the expectation that life will be perfect. There will be good times and there will be bad times.

4. Participate in school activities with your friends.

I regret not doing this more. Some of the activities that were done at my school in Jamaica were things that did not happen here, unfortunately. These activities create long-lasting memories to cherish with your friends.

5. Group work sucks no matter which way you try it.

Working in a group with high school students can be horrible and messy.  The root of the two arguments I had in high school was caused by group work. If you’ve never worked in a group, you’re probably wondering why in the world do people speak so badly about it.

Well, let me tell you why:

Some people do not do anything but sit around.

If they do decide to do something, it’s slapdash and it would’ve been better if they did nothing at all.

Some people do not show up for any meetings nor do anything, but on the day of the presentation, they show up with a huge smile on their face and pretend they’re the creator of all the great work.

If you’re a dedicated student who places great value on having a high quality of work, you end up doing everything by yourself.
